L
iterature/visuality
1) though I am tackling a general/methodological topic, I still need a specific thesis. So each part will be revolving around this statement. Tentatively, my statement will be "the history of literature witnesses increasing visuality".
2) Part one, methodology; part two history; part three case studies; appendix, vocabulary list. However, in writing, start with case study and end with methodology. Besides, connect history with methodology- say, how the critics/authors see/study visuality in literature? What is the trend of changes? What are the different approaches and are these approaches related to specific time framce?
3) how to incorportate world literature into this literature/visuality thesis? Use them as examples that emerge in different time period/approaches. Refer to Norton Anthology, see how it organizes the materials.
4) How to use examples. Ezra Pound/ Tang Poetry- can be used as an example of conventional approach to read comparative arts
5) other grounds to explore:
. what are the aspects of "increasing visuality"? color/subtleties/shades (Nabkov: nobody really sees the color yellow in literature until 20th century. ask quote!); the conception of size, relative size (before Gulliver's Travels, there is no relative size in literature, big is described as big, but not how big, such as in the Farie Queen);
2. the dialogue form v.s. the picture form: in literature, the dialogue form is always preferred and adopted. I can talk about the picture form, but can argue them as "exceptions", such as Achilius's shield.
-----------
The story of comparative literature: a group of German refuges came to America after WWII and started this interdiscplinary study to cater their need to do literature with several languages, German, English, Latin, Greek, French...They are strong in Classical studies. Later on, we see all other literatures coming into this discipline, becoming the so-called literature. And now, it is more like "field-studies" the post-colonial, the gender, the visual...and a lot more. This is the trend.
1) I need to be both specialist and know-it-all. It is good to do author studies, but it is important to keep breadth. I can choose a field that is simple and clear at this stage, and always bring the approach to the more difficult topics and newer topics. I need to have something to fall back on, and that something is ...? This is what I need to find out. 2) Keep looking at what you are truly interested in, and keep looking at the job market. 3) be versatile in what to teach! 4) How many languages do I need to be a comparative literature scholar??? At least two strong ones??? and more???
